The science behind Motiview
For decades, recruitment decisions have relied on CVs, cover letters and interviews. While these methods provide information about experience and skills, they are poor at measuring one of the strongest predictors of performance: motivation.
Motiview was developed by Neurolytics to solve this problem. Using scientifically validated video analysis, Motiview measures whether a person is truly motivated by the specific role they are applying for. Objectively, transparently and without bias. In this article, we explain the science behind our video-based motivation assessment and why it delivers better hiring outcomes.
Why CVs and motivation letters don’t predict motivation
CVs and motivation letters focus on past experience and self-presentation. They do not measure whether someone will:
Enjoy the daily activities of the role
Feel energized by the responsibilities
Stay engaged over time
Thrive in the specific work context
Research consistently shows that self-reported motivation is unreliable. People adapt their answers and CVs to what they think recruiters want to see and hear. As a result, organizations hire candidates who look good on paper but turn out to be disengaged, stressed or unhappy in the role.
Motivation is not what people say, it is what people experience while engaging with a task or role.
Motivation as observable behavior
Motiview is based on a fundamental scientific insight: motivation shows itself in behavior.
When someone is genuinely motivated, this is reflected in subtle, often unconscious behavioral changes, such as:
Facial muscle activity and expressions
Changes in engagement and energy over time
Consistency between verbal responses and non-verbal signals
These signals cannot be reliably captured through text. Video analyzing, however, makes them measurable.
How our video-based motivation assessment works
Motiview uses short, structured video’s in which candidates are introduced to the role and its core activities. While candidates watch and respond, the system measures behavioral changes over time.
The scientific core consists of 3 key principles:
1. Individual baseline measurement
Every person has a unique behavioral baseline. Motivation is not measured by comparing people to each other, but by analyzing how an individual’s behavior changes over time.
2. Longitudinal behavioral analysis
Motiview analyzes more than 200 facial data points while watching a video of the tasks that are related to the job and tracks how these signals evolve during the interaction. These behavioral dynamics indicate whether the role activates or drains someone’s motivational drivers.
3. Evidence-based interpretation
The interpretation model is built on thousands of tests and analyses, allowing Motiview to map the full range of human behavioral responses and link them to motivation for a specific role.
This makes the assessment objective, consistent and scientifically grounded..
Fair, transparent and bias-free
A core requirement of scientific assessment is fairness. Motiview is designed to analyze motivation independent of age, gender and ethnicity.
All candidates are assessed in exactly the same way, under the same conditions. This reduces bias introduced by human judgment and creates a more equal hiring process.
Motiview does not evaluate personality traits or demographics. It focuses solely on whether the role presented matches a person’s intrinsic drivers.
From guessing to measuring motivation
Our video-based motivation assessment represents a shift in recruitment. Instead of guessing motivation from CVs and interviews, organizations can now measure motivation scientifically.
Motiview combines behavioral science, large-scale data and ethical design to answer a simple but critical question: Will this person genuinely enjoy and thrive in this role?
That insight benefits candidates, recruiters and organizations alike and marks the future of motivation-driven hiring.
